Earl,

I forgot to mention one other factor. As soon as Gigabit Ethernet really starts shipping, some of its inherent problems will be exposed. For example, The current issue of LAN Times has a front page article titled, "Jury is out on early gigabit". They cite that the hardware is not interoperable, there will be no standard until 1998, and network management is problematic as challenges surrounding GE.

In some respects, this might help Fibre Channel, which is a much more mature product.
