ARM, Renesas expand licensing deal

Electronic News, 2/12/2007

Despite suffering in recent months from foreign currency-adjustment issues, Cambridge, England-based semiconductor intellectual property supplier ARM Holdings plc is continuing to plug away toward profitability with the expansion of its relationship with longtime ally Renesas Technology Corp.

Renesas announced today it has licensed the low-power ARM1176JZF-S processor for the development of advanced mobile/consumer electronics applications.

In addition, Renesas has also licensed the ARM PrimeCell Level-2 Cache Controller for mobile devices. According to the company, Renesas will be able to develop SoCs without encountering bus bottlenecks, as the ARM1176JZF-S processor and Level-2 Cache Controller are compliant with the ARM AMBA 3 AXI specification.

ARM said its ARM1176JZF-S processor is optimized for 3D graphics through its integrated, floating-point processor, which enables the running of applications on mobile devices. Using ARM Jazelle technology, the ARM1176JZF-S processor is also well-suited for embedded Java execution, the company said.
