In foreign affairs, sometimes you have to pay blackmail to achieve an overriding end. The goal here is to get NK not to proliferate and not to throw its weight around in their part of asia, particularly with Japan and SK. As repugnant as the prospect is, giving Kim the cash to ostensibly try to follow the chinese model in exchange for some and ultimately all of their nukes is a good outcome.
With Iran, there is a deal to be had that either would legitimize Irans nuclear ambitions under the umbrella of reestablishing relations with the US and Israel while abandoning terror and terror movements or eliminate irans nukes altogether. What is needed is a policy that isolates al queda by removing iran from the terror roles and helping MAS improve their long term viablility.
