There has probably been no company more forthcoming with prior announcements of quarterly results that differ from analyst predictions whether on the upside or the downside. Since the same management is in place that has had that policy, I would have expected a preannouncement if the news was substantially off from expectations. That said, we are left with differences of pennies. The only thing that can be said is that there has been conflicting information. The Dells, Compaqs, IBMs, HPs are going great guns and setting sales volume and revenue records. Therefore we are left with one of two scenarios. Either the mix of chips has moved the ASPs up or down or the second tier manufacturers have fallen off a cliff. None of these possibilities rings a big bell with me, though I think that some of the second tier guys might be weakening (great news for AMD).

I personally think that a surprisingly strong low end market on the consumer side has developed and that that has nudged ASPs down ever so slightly. But the consumer side is also interested in the PII so it's real hard to figure.

Getting back to my original statement, if Intel didn't preannounce then results will probably be about where they said they would be last quarter, give or take a few pennies. Of course I seen Wall Street take a stock down 40% for missing a result by a penny (and I have seen them lift AMD for turning a predicted profit into a loss). Go figure.
