Development work has started on a US$35m manganese mine in the Bembele mountains that is to be exploited by a Chinese company, Compagnie industrielle et commerciale des mines de Huazhou (CICMH) – a partnership between China's Ningbo Huaneng Kuangye and Huazhou.

The mine is located 36km from the town of Ndjole, near the Transgabonais railway line, and it is thought to hold 30m tonnes of reserves with mineral purity estimated at 30-40%. According to local media the mine will eventually produce 1m t/y of manganese, and employ 300 Gabonese.
