Common misunderstanding about fuel consumption in car design.

Aerodynamics and inertia(potential energy) are two areas of interest. Lincoln is a 5000 lb car and has inertia to travel at high speeds. So, normally it runs 9 miles per gallon. By using 5th gear(1:1 ratio electric clutch), the inertia of its weight travelling at high speed can save gas consumption to run at 18-20 miles per gallon. If the car can use aerodynamic lift, the inertia can save even more gas.

On the other hand, small Escort at 2500 lbs with small engine runs 24 miles per gallon. Unless top speed is run at maximum torque, there is no way to save gas. Chrysler Miser series of cars can run 33 miles per gallon due to top speed restriction laws of the 1980s. Honda Civic(96 MPH top speed) and Nissan can run 40 miles per gallon because of weight consideration, very light car design and narrow track(treads) tires.

So technology of fuel consumption depends on which is the cheapest technology you can use. Aerodynamic design is shaping the car exterior, not much added cost in production. Inertia usage by one way mechanical slip or electric clutch in the 4/5th gear for drive shaft on rear wheel drive cars may cost a little more.

Have fun? Clutches can be an option at anytime of the model year. Aerodynamic horizontal deflectors or vertical stabilizing wings on the side of the car can be options too.
