GPS was a “high-tech” until recently. It’s true that there are many GPS chips out there. However, I think that the SiRF Star III with 200K correlators and -159 dBm sensitivity is a leading design that will go into many products. I recently did some due diligence on u-blox (in order to reply to a PM). They have a chip design with 1 million (!) correlators with -160 dBm sensitivity. They are also able to do dead reckoning using a turn-rate gyro and wheel odometers. u-blox.com These hybrid approaches to enhance GPS will continue apace, IMO. This will be the “new” high-tech in GPS applications. Qualcomm have an A-GPS solution that could be applied to consumer-type applications, but I don’t see it moving outside of a mobile phone.
