The virtues of staying off the 'No call list'.

Because so many people complained about telemarketers calling them unasked the government instituted a 'No call list' where one can get on a list that telemarketers have to heed and leave them alone. This is really a sad thing. After all these people are calling because they want to talk to you. It is not just courtesy to do so, but an opportunity to relate to another human being. I think sometimes the person being called just doesn't know how to respond so I thought I would offer some suggestions.

Caller: "Hello, I am calling to talk to you about aluminum siding."
Me: "That is wonderful, I would like to talk to you about Jesus."

Caller: "Hello, I would like to talk to you about a wonderful business opportunity.
Me: "Great! Could you tell me what kind of vacuum cleaner you own. I have started selling a superb model that even if you own a new one it is worth dumping it to get this new model."
Caller: "Sir, I am not in the market for a vacuum cleaner."
Me: "That's OK. How are you set for cookware or knives. Nothing will improve your kitchen like new knives and cookware."

Now, I will admit that on occasion telemarketers don't call at the best times. Still one shouldn't be rude or brusque. In fact in many ways this is the best time to reach out.

Caller: "Hello, I am calling to offer you a great business opportunity.
Me, "I'm sorry, I have to go out now, but I am interested. Could you give me your home phone number and I will call you?"
Caller: "I don't want to give out my home phone number."
Me: "You did call me at mine. This isn't showing much trust. What kind of relationship can we have if you won't tell me your phone number?"

Caller: "Hello, I am calling to offer you a great business opportunity.
Me, "I'm sorry, I have to go out now, but I am interested. Could you give me your home phone number and I will call you?"
Caller: "I don't want to give out my home phone number."
Me: "You did call me at mine, fair is fair. [Now say the following slowly with proper stress.] I really want your home phone number. [This approach seems to really resonate with female callers.]

I would never want to lose the opportunity to talk with others like this. I can only urge you to get off the no call list and make contact with your fellow human beings.
Next week I will tell you why people pushing their religion door to door are always welcome at my house.
