OT: Howy, one of my areas of study in academia was the sociology and cultural studies of sport, and one of the areas I found most fascinating was the domestication and regularization of proto-sports like the one you describe into the highly regulated and structured sports entities we have today.

I can tell you that versions of that ball game were very widespread, usually held between two different villages who tried to push the giant ball back to their own village. There is still an annual contest every year between two small villages in England.
