Very well stated discussion of the realities of 21st century North America. I am a little puzzled by your characterization of these realities as springing from "liberal reasoning". You are a Canadian, I think, and perhaps there is a different orientation between "liberals" and "conservatives" in the Great White North. The form of "a dictatorship of the governing elite" that you have so clearly described is in fact the current paradigm in the US. This is a manifestation of what is considered to be the conservative wing of American politics. Messrs Bush, Cheney and various leaders of the Christian orthodoxy being recognized as the foremost "conservative" thinkers in the US. I have often puzzled over your condemnation of "liberals" as being the problem. I assume there is a 180 degree difference between Canadian and US liberals, who are generally in the forefront here of the philosophy you are espousing. Maybe the conservative/liberal labels should be used sparingly in inter North American discussion.
