Well stated, metacomet.

Here are some of the definitions of "liberal" in common use today:
1) someone who believes government control should be lessened (traditional political economics => Bush is a neo-liberal)
2) someone who believe government control should be increased (American right wing definition of their political opponents)
3) a member of the "natural governing party" that grabs the most popular ideas from the left and right to run up the middle (Canadian politics)

Then you throw in the various contradictions between social vs. economic liberalism and you end up with a dog's breakfast.

"Liberal" in the sense that EC was using it is also a label used by the bully pulpit right wingers in the US to shout down and silence anyone they don't agree with.

And turning to "conservative", it actually means to want things not to change, to be conserve, so a "conservative" in a "liberal" society is someone who wants things to stay "liberal".
