william and all,
regarding K6 poor yields, this was posted by Yousef (whom i consider, along with Paul, as the top chip gurus on SI) on the AMD thread:
This situation should worry AMD investors because it is quite clear now
that the .35um AMD process has no hope of ever producing faster CPU's
than those at 233mhz. While, Intel has been very capable of 266 & 300mhz
CPU's from their .35um process. By the time that AMD gets a .25um process
capable of matching Intel's 300mhz speed, Intel will be delivering the
first .25um Deschutes at mid 300 -> 400mhz speeds !!

If AMD has to wait until .25 process to get to speeds higher than 233, then this is very significant. It gives Intel a HUGE WINDOW of NO COMPETITION on the high end chips. AMD promised a 266 K6 by the end of Q3, and, again, they broke that promise. Not to say that Intel wouldn't have enjoyed nice margins on its high-end chips if AMD had delivered, but now its a virtual "slam-dunk".
