The sooner we start forking over some aid, the sooner they have to start behaving, or not. Anything is better than no dialogue, and it's good to get the US, China, and N Korea to the table to talk about anything.

I think you've hit upon the primary point to be made on the issue. Bush's insistence that all talks with N. Korea be multi-later discussions between NK and countries either neighboring it, or possessing national interests, now makes it virtually impossible to Pyongyang to walk away without resulting in loss of face on China's part.

Had Bush complied with demands by such Democratic rivals as Kerry, or Richardson, for unilateral talks with NK, we'd be in a position where NK would have free rein to dangle the US on a string.

So now.. Kim Jong Il must show some level of compliance, and any intransigence will be an offense against not just the US, but every one of the 5 members who have negotiated this agreement with NK.
