<<Walter Posch, an expert on Islamic issues at the European Union's Institute for Security Studies (eds: correct), said Sadr's move out of the frontline was a strategy.

"He is asking his Mahdi Army to show low profile, to go underground. But do you really think that the Mahdi Army will go away ? Of course not," he said.

He said that while the security plan was a "high gamble" for the Americans, Sadr could not but profit from its outcome, whatever that might be.

"If it works, the Mahdi army will become a political force. If it does not work the population will want them to come back and they will remain and come back stronger," he said.

Already this week, with the security push a few days old, some Shiite residents of east Baghdad were calling for the Mahdi Army to come out of hiding and protect them after the latest bloody bomb attack. >>
