For a long time the medical profession denied that Aids could be transmitted via any mode other than gay sex

I'm curious because I was an ICU nurse in Boston from the beginning of the AIDS epidemic in the mid80s thru the late 90s..and since 1987, we were wearing gloves, mask, gowns for any procedure where blood might be be an issue and in an emergency, where a patient had to be intubated, intravenous lines placed..we covered up in what at the time appeared like a science fiction movie..goggles, gowns, masks and gloves..goggles were later to be added after it was found that it can be transmitted intraocularly..

Later when Hepatitis C became an acknowledged issue, patients were instructed to stay away from family and friends if they had a cut or were bleeding..now, this was Boston where so much research was happening and I can't speak for other parts of the country at the time..
