The threat of extinction is everywhere. Threats do not operate as processes of the actual thing. Extinction is one thing. The threat of the process avalanching is another. Species extinct from high population to extremely low in a very quick hurry. Ergo the sudden extinction of the Grand Banks Cod and the disappearance of the fish off the Chilean coast a few years back. From normal population to no catch in one season. petermaas.nl Actual extinction is only occurring very slowly in these areas. 1. aids 2. starvation 3. inbreeding. (Ozarks, democratic party) 4. ocean becoming poisoned and depleted. whales dying en masse. major source of protein for human race. 5. global warming. (almost imperceptible, but Koan assures us it is underway and inexorable. I trust him.) 6. soil exhaustion, hybridization and food poisons. (this is debatable. Health impacts can only be felt over generations. Farmers tell me monoculture Sk soils will only last another 35 years. after that no bread. it is well known max soil life is 150 years even with crop rotation and careful farming. we don't do that. 7. increased tendency towards global war. rogues states develop mass destruction and delivery systems daily. loose cannon leaders who don't understand the need for mutual controls that became necessary after the cuba missile crisis. With loose control over military, they could precipitate global war. Rogue elements of their military could independently decide to launch. almost happened in 1963 with Russian General in Cuba who against order armed missiles on launch pads with nukes. Sure to happen in asia in the next 25 years. Same paradigm as the multi tier lebanese "system". 8. widespread unrest and incipient rebellion and chaos. well underway in Africa and South America. Partly felt in suburban areas of Europe and the US. 9. declining average IQ. people hydridization with inferior intellects that comes from massive cross breeding is not helping. fewer and fewer geniuses being born. in 100 years the population will not be able to run nucleer reaktors. too many Homer Simpsons will not be able to keep up with the complexities of international politics and a complex technological society. Computers and other technologies will fall into disrepair. (Windows XP.. any argument.. ok?) Society's infrastructure will crumble and fail. fewer and few discoveries and inventions necessary to feed and cloth mankind will lead to increasing famine, pestilence, and social and political disaster. I see this on SI as about 40% of the people reading my posts do not understand them at all. And I ain't that smart. I shudder to think that this generation will lead us safely into the future. it is getting closer to midnite for the hr. EC<:-}
