Having seen the effects of several bad chainsaw accidents that happened locally (actually a couple of those were fatal), we don't use one anymore. I class them in with those donorcycles that you love so much (not!).

We have 4 different sized bow saws (what we call Swede saws up this way). The largest makes quick work of taking down a dead or diseased tree if necessary, although we usually leave dead trees standing in place for the critters unless there's a risk that they could fall and hurt someone or land on a building.

My grandfather used to cut wood to (entirely) heat his own house and to sell as cordwood to others -- and it was all cut and split with his hand saws and axes. I figure that, if he could do it (and he wasn't young either), then we should be able to cut up the piddly amount we need each year around our place.

Btw, yes, flea markets are a good place to get tools. I'm also seeing tools being given away over the local Freecycle network as well, so that's probably a good place to look. I also think people could get back to more sharing around of tools like they used to. Farmers in this area used to share their less often used equipment such as post-hole augurs, bush hogs, and such.
