Taxes: Voted for the higher alcohol taxes and vehicle fees that financed Gov. George Ryan’s multibillion-dollar Illinois FIRST building program. (1999)

• Voted to end $300 million in tax breaks for businesses. (2004)

• Opposed abolishing the state’s sales tax on gasoline. (2000)

• Opposed tax credits for parents who send their children to private schools. (1999)

Guns, crime: Voted yes to allow retired police to carry concealed weapons. (2004)

• Tried to limit handgun purchases to one per month. (2000)

• Supported requiring trigger locks. (1999)

• Opposed making gang members eligible for the death penalty if they kill someone to help their gang. (2001)

• Sponsored law requiring police videotape interrogations in some serious crimes. (2003)

• Helped pass overhaul of troubled death penalty system. (2003)
