I can see why Johnson's book hit the bargain shelf so soon after publication. I don't think he thinks any worthwhile art was done after the early 19th century. He really has it in for the modernists. Consider this blurb describing a work by Klimt.

"Salome was the favourite subject for artists in the Art Nouveau period, as in Klimt's version. Though specialising in lesbian symbolism, he fathered fourteen bastards."

Idiosyncratic, to say the least...
