Dale > Most of my in-laws in SA have been targets of armed attacks in their homes at one time or another, very scary stuff.

Sorry to hear that. I've had only one incident about 12 years ago. Fortunately no one was hurt.

Frankly, I don't know what can be done about the crime? There are now so many unemployed, desperate people in SA, including many illegal immigrants from all over Africa, that it goes far beyond a simple policing matter. Indeed, I would say a serious aggravating factor has been Mbeki's 'non-policy' towards Mugabe. Today there are 2-3 million Zimbabweans in SA and most have no means of support other than crime.

Another problem concerns education and the failure of the school system not only to teach subjects but to inculcate values, something which the families do not do. In fact, this is never ever discussed. But I suppose if the parents are busy contracting and dying from HIV/AIDS, that would be asking too much.

A third problem concerns the lack of jobs and the fact that SA is now primarily a consumer economy, something like the US has become. Because of the strong rand, local production cannot compete with high quality Chinese and other imports so manufacturing has gone to the wall.

Indeed, if one considers the magnitude of these various problems I can only see the people becoming more desperate and the crime getting worse.
