I remember traveling through the Monterey area of Calif and stopping in to a small Italian restaurant for dinner one night. We weren't very wine savy at the time so ordered the house wine which happened to be the least expensive on the menu. I tell you, it was some of the best Dago red I've ever had. The owner told us that it was from his small personal winery and that wine making was his hobby. I don't know how he managed to sell it in his restaurant what with Calif being pretty strict with their liquor licenses, but I'll never forget that wonderful wine.

I've heard that the same kind of wines.......locally grown and bottled.....can be had in little European villages.
