Steve, I don't agree with your conclusions, but I do like the way you express your arguments. I thought the invasion of Iraq was a bad idea at the time, but that really doesn't matter now. The fact is, we're THERE, and we need to be thinking about what to do going forward. Simply packing up and leaving Iraq to stew in its own juice doesn't seem like a very reasonable option to me. It would mean abandoning the entire region, including Israel. Even if it weren't for the oil, and even if we could live with the bloodletting that would be involved as those Mideastern nations warred with one another throughout the region, I doubt any western country would be unaffected as Islamists spread their war worldwide. It would consolidate so much radical Islamic power there that it would make Hitler's Germany look like pikers as their world dominating hegimony spread. The way I see it, it is either a relatively small war in Iraq now, or a major worldwide conflagration 10 or 20 years from now.
