No Cougars After All
Despite reported sightings near Fremont BART, officials find no mountain lions in the area.

Chronicle Staff Report

Tuesday, February 20, 2007

(02-20) 15:28 PST FREMONT -- After investigating reports of as many as two mountain lions being sighted near the Fremont BART station, Fish and Game officials determined this afternoon that there are no such animals in the area, BART spokesman Linton Johnson said.

Fish and Game officials flew a helicopter over the area, near Mowry Avenue, and detected no activity with their heat-sensing equipment, Johnson said.

The first sighting was reported at 11:11 a.m. by a doctor who practices in a nearby medical office, Johnson said.

A BART community service officer also verified the presence of "some sort of creature that was at least larger than a German shepherd" in a fenced-off area under the tracks near the station parking lot, Johnson said.

The sightings caused no train delays.
