Re: You could assume, that these will be slightly more expansive compared to high-end Nvidia, but who cares, if AMD could establish the CLEAR lead? I think it will be worth to put 10$ more overall down the line...
...Again, look at the picture, the cooling stuff for the high- end ATIs isn't that different compared to Nvidia. Just go to CPUs, where you could have a feeling for pricing. If, and thats a big if, AMD needs a slightly better cooling device , the spread is in the 2-3$ region. Again, if they reach with that the performance crown, I don't complain.
And every day that goes by without the R600 is one more day where the improvements become less "worth it". In the meantime NVIDIA builds up a sizeable warchest and will lower prices accordingly on the 8800 series to remain competitive when the R600 finally arrives.
ATIs DIE is smaller compared to Nvidias, you should better ask Nvidia how good their yields are?...I don't know, why do you repeat yourself? This topic is even more an Nvidia topic.
Sorry, but yields are more the just a function of die size. 8800GTX/GTS cards have been available since launch day and haven't disappeared since. NVIDIA just launched a $300 version of the 8800GTS. In the meantime R600 has suffered from a string of delays and still has no firm launch date. The company that can't deliver any GPUs should be the one under scrutiny for yields, not the one delivering for months.
Interesting that the 8800 series is already more popular with Valve (Half-Life 2, Counterstrike, etc.) gamers than the X1950 series despite the fact the 8800 series launched a couple months later than the X1950 XTX:

I don't know, why you always assume, that Nvidia has good or much better yields with a bigger DIE at the same foundry? Strange ...
Strange that you are unfamiliar with the concept that yields tend drop when moving to a new, smaller process as AMD is doing by producing the R600 on 80-nm instead of 90-nm.
When will those parts be available?
April or May is the latest word. Fortunately it appears AMD won't be nearly as far behind NVIDIA in this respect. |
