Watched a wonderful film on yesterday. I think it was on Sundance but I had Tivo's it. When Cheney starts using words like existential it scares me for that is exactly what Hitler did, as illustrated n this film entitled Language Does Not Lie. It is a film about a Jewish professor who taught at the University of Dresden who kept a diary all through the thirties until the ending of WW II in 1945.. In it he transcribed the entire language used by the 3rd Reich that was insidious. Drop by drop it infected the Germans like an IV.. They manipulated words.... and used phrases like we have now, War on Terror. Axis of Evil. We will not lose.Victory is the only option etc. etc. Most of what Hitler said was almost taken from Rousseau... but not one seemed to have figured that out. He called eternal truths the right of Germans to be of the people and the Country. He just was a fanatical speaker.. People bought into everything he said... Not only did the Germans t use inspiring Nationalistic slogans to stir the hearts of the Germans but they actually altered words..They had an entire language for Jews...Not knowing German I cannot reprint them. Victor Klemperer was married to an Aryan which spared his life. The terrible bombing of Dresden allowed them both to escape the city with the refugees..... So both he and his wife lived and he got to publish this diary which is just wonderful. No one could imagine how the government denied the Jews just one privilege at a time until they were unable to even go out of the house but one hour a day. They were not allowed fish, no libraries,parks,public facilities at all... no typewriters no pets so they were forced to put down their 13 year old cat. The Diary records all of this from the time Hitler came into power until the end of the war. For the Jews each year another normal human pleasure was denied them. And of course you know they had to wear a yellow star on their left breast. He was one of the few Jews left in the City of Dresden as all the others were slowly evacuated and died in concentration camps... Language Does Not LIE by Victor Klempner...Highly recommend as an historical document to see how History can repeat itself.
