I have no sympathy for Dictators ('smart' ones, or 'dumb' ones).... Still, Saddam was cagey enough to hang on as absolute ruler for several decades --- in a region of the world known for political volatility --- and played the US and the Soviets off against each other for many years. Perhaps history will judge that his greatest strategic blunder was in taking on Iran, in the first Gulf War, (what is now called the eight year long 'Iran/Iraq' War). Still... one more brutal Dictator killed, 'all in a day's good work' say I... but the world is still lousy with 'em.
