I have no sympathy for Dictators ('smart' ones, or 'dumb' ones)....

Still, Saddam was cagey enough to hang on as absolute ruler for several decades --- in a region of the world known for political volatility --- and played the US and the Soviets off against each other for many years.

Perhaps history will judge that his greatest strategic blunder was in taking on Iran, in the *first* Gulf War, (what is now called the eight year long 'Iran/Iraq' War).

Still... one more brutal Dictator killed, 'all in a day's good work' say I... but the world is still lousy with 'em.
