I let Gem elaborate on this, but Islam is full of philosophizing and interpretation of various texts, including the Koran. Believing the text to be inerrant has not stopped the muslims from "improving and expanding" their knowledge of it.

IMO, all appeals to "interpretation" are based on the need to reconcile a modern society and the growing body of human knowledge with the sacred texts that reflect a period in the distant past. Where a conflict exists between what we believe today and what centuries ago was stated as the Truth, one has to choose between 3 options:

(1) to lose faith and go with the observations/science
(2) to become a fundamentalist/fanatic and choose "God's word" over "man's knowledge"
(3) to try to reconcile the text with the modern beliefs via interpretation

Now a question to you: if you believe that the text may be in error, but you don't know where the error is or how big it is (which would have to be the case, otherwise some form of correction could be made), then of what value is the Book? How can you have faith that you are doing what God asked of you, if you are not sure if that is in fact what he is asking of you?
