The Zenith connection 2

Digital anyone? At Zenith's Digital Media Group, digital isn't a trend or the next technological evolution...it's our business.
Is your current analog system in need of an upgrade? Is DBS drawing your best customers away? Are you losing your competitive edge?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, we can help. Zenith Network Systems has been providing answers to complex business and technological questions for more than 15 years. We are a pioneer in the analog cable set-top business, developed two-way interactive technologies - and even invented the remote control, and a big part of digital HDTV.

Now we're at it again. Our Digital Media Group team is working to develop solutions to take your business into the next century.

Zenith is on the cutting edge of developing high performance, cost-effective and extremely flexible standards-based digital set-top terminals designed with your future in mind.

Over the past year, Zenith has brought together some the industry's best engineering minds, developed technology alliances with leading MPEG compression and decompression and Network Interface Modules companies, and modernized our manufacturing facilities to create a high-performance, flexible and extremely secure line of digital terminals based on the MPEG2/DVB standard.

The result is a digital terminal designed to provide the highest quality video, audio and graphics available. Its renewable smartcard-based security provides you with the assurances that your network is protected from unauthorized access. Application development is a breeze, and several companies will be developing value-added applications for this technology.

Concerned about network support? Zenith designed a unique interchangeable Network Interface Module (NIM). This means any terminal can support a variety of networks including one- way and two-way HFC, MMDS, and even Switched Digital Video (SDV) by simply plugging in the appropriate NIM. Interchangeable NIMs enables Zenith to design a single set- top unit that can be leveraged across many customers, keeping costs low.

Our digital terminal is loaded with standard features including a 68xxx CPU (a Coldfire or PowerPC version will be available in late 1997), 512k flash memory, 2mb video memory, 2mb scratch memory, hardware accelerated graphics processor, an MPEG audio and video processor, DVB descrambler, IR transmitter/receiver, and conditional access smartcard interface.

But what's great hardware without great software? Every unit comes with the Microware OS/9 DAVID or DAVIDLite operating system with MAUI, and Macrovision anti-taping technology. With standards, you can choose an alternative OS, if desired.

To simplify the main board design, we have moved network dependencies to the NIM. For example, depending on the network, the NIM might contain the network interface logic, QAM demodulation, adaptive equalization, forward error correction, analog processing, graphics overlay on analog video, BTSC stereo decode, tuning and back-channel (telco or QPSK) upstream processing.

If your existing analog system is no longer sufficient, let Zenith Network Systems help. For more information about how Zenith can help you meet the digital future, call us at (800) 239-0900 in the U.S. or (847) 391-7702 outside the U.S. You may also fax us at (847) 391-8919 with information on your network deployment needs.
