Just got off a conference call for an international mining company based in Sweden with operations in Ireland, Canada, Germany, Portugal, and Africa......so there was a real mix of people on the call. Everyone was talking in English and the report was done in English......numbers were reported in both dollars and Euros. However, everything was discussed in terms of the metric system. There were analysts and investors from all over asking questions.

Finally, an American analyst got on the line. From the get go, you can tell he was annoyed. He didn't like that the numbers were in both euros and dollars; that they used the metric system and the English tonne rather than the system we use. He had other complaints as well. Obviously the guy was a jerk. Part of the problem is that the company just went through a major merger and a splite, and those events had muddied up the waters. Nonetheless, that didn't excuse this guy's rudeness. Later, another American got on the line and he was perfectly fine so it was just this one obnoxious guy.

However, it made me think.....the US has chosen to do things its way......like not using the metric system that most of the world uses [although I was taught both......I understand that's not true of all Americans]. In addition, its the rare American who can speak fluently a language other than English. What happens if we lose our numero uno status? I shudder to think how we'll be treated.
