The laterite ore requires a lot of energy (heat) to refine. sulphide ore "burns" in the smelter creating heat, laterite needs lots of fuel. oil at $10 or oil at $60 makes quite a difference. Also leaching processes leave some messy waste discharges that are enviro problems especially in wet climates.
