Hollywood created Jack Bauer in the same mold they use for any war story since Vietnam. The message is that anyone fighting in a war eventually becomes a sociopath. The only variation on the theme is that some torture and kill without remorse - or even seem to take perverse pleasure in it - while others (the good ones) are deeply conflicted over it.
