The Tet offensive was a huge failure for the Vietcong. You wouldn't think so by reading the reports or watching the televised news of the time, all of which I remember vividly.

It was literally years before the extent of the VC near catastrophe became well known. And I can assure you that there will be a hue and cry about how wrong I am.

Oh, well.

It's unfortunate but perceptions do matter, and most people are sheep; their perceptions are about as accurate as Chicken Little's and as easily manipulated.

By the way, I recommend to you two short articles in the Feb. issue of Foreign Affairs, the by first the Singapore Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, entitled The United States. Iraq and the War on Terror. The second is by Dominique Moisi, The Clash of Emotions, in which she posits that just as Arabs and Muslims are ruled by shame, the West is ruled by fear. The argument is not fleshed out too well, but it is a very interesting notion nonetheless.
