Last night, residents of Boikutsong outside Lichtenburg barricaded streets and burnt tyres. Police say similar protests are planned for Biesies-vlei and Bloemhof this weekend.

William Mpembe, the acting provincial police commissioner, says police are also aware of other planned protest marches around the province, but he says they are ready to deal with all incidents of violence.

However, at Boikhutsong township just outside Lichtenburg, the scene of the latest eruption of violent situation remains tense. Boikutsong township has seen violent protests against poor municipal services delivery.<<

>>Schooling was severely disrupted at Ikageleng township just outside Zeerust in the North West. This comes in the wake of the arrest of nine people following a community protest about poor municipal services in past three days.

The angry community, which is demanding the release of those arrested, blockaded streets - making entry or exit out of the township impossible.

The majority of learners, who attend school in town, could not go because of the prevailing situation. Those attending local schools were also affected. Learners who made it to school were asked to go home because the majority of others could not make it. <<
