because a good blog will cross link several interesting stories with good commentary on them, or comment in depth on a particular story with expert knowledge. Reporters have no expert knowledge on anything. Even the best of them just try to quote accurately and frame a story not too inaccurately and in a readable fashion. Any sort of commentary from someone who really knows, eg. legal commentary from a trial lawyer who knows the law and has tried similar cases, will be far superior to the newspaper account. Not accidently, several of the best and most popular blogs are written by law professors, like Glen Reynolds at Instapundit.
