Lorne: You make a good point, and I stand corrected on my misuse of the term "islam." Shortsighted indeed since most, if not all, of the achievements to which I referred pre-date the birth of mohamud. What I had in mind was the arabic numerical system, the concept of zero, and the true arch -- that werre all monumental contributions to humanity. After mohamid, arab physicians of the region can be credited with very significant advances in medicine and surgical techniques; by comparison, European physicians and blood-letting barbers (later to become surgeons) were practicing witchcraft. I guess if you were to catalogue exclusive, islamic contributions to the welfare of overall humanity over the last 100 years it would be a very very sparse list. Thank you for pointing out my mental lapse -- much appreciate. If the 15-minutes-time-to-edit limit had not expired, I'd have deleted the comment and denied ever having written it. :^)
