It doesn't pose an existential threat to us and never could. Do you doubt that OBL would like to have nuked New York if he had the means? To watch tens of thousands of serious soldiers (hundreds of thousands when you count Iran and Syria) radicalize themselves with a faith that sanctifies mass murder, arm themselves, declare that they will destroy America and restore the caliphate, and then just to blow them off as not a serious threat - after 9/11 too! well one doesn't quite know what to say. All I can see is a kind of neo-colonialism, not taking the natives too seriously.
