Why do you think they named it "Greenland?"

To make it easier to attract new settlers to buy the land.
It was, after all, a large commercial scale land development project. 1000 years ago the Vikings were being pushed out of their kingdom in Hardanger by various Christian forces. Their kingom in Kinsarvik could not be reached across the glaciers of the HardangerVidda, and only around 1000 AD did outside forces possess a sea power adequate to enter the fyords by sea. A large contingent of the Harding clan settled in a fertile protected fyord that compared favorably with their old abode. They called this location Iceland to discourage anyone from following them. In their scouting they also found some harbors, but no protected fyords. They called the closest one Greenland and the next one Vinland. These were sold to pagan settlers outside the Harding clan. Both settlements ultimately failed.
