Dan3 on intel vs. Microsoft monopoly

100% of Microsoft's customers could switch overnight to Linux/Open Office, etc. if they really wanted. There would certainly be some pain, but there's nothing stopping that. What sort of monopoly is that?

Intel's monopoly is different -- nobody else ever had the production capacity to replace Intel CPUs. If everybody stopped using Intel CPUs overnight, there wouldn't be enough capacity to make replacements. Even the switching of a single large OEM (say, Dell) would be unmanageable.

AMD now has capacity to supply 30% of the market. Times are changing. Every quarter, AMD's capacity increases to cover a larger percentage of the market. Seems about 2% extra per quarter. If this continues, AMD will eventually have capacity to supply 50% of the market. Dell can now start using AMD processors without causing a complete meltdown in AMD's other channel supplies.
