I think it was more likely cool and green. Even under the best conditions, I expect those Greenland settlements had marginal farming conditions with a limited range of short season crops like hay, barley, oats, peas, greens, berries, hardy sheep, and Icelandic ponies.

People operating under such marginal conditions have no margin of error left when conditions get worse. That's why all those waves of northern European barbarians kept heading south to warmer lands like England, France, Spain, and Italy.
