Poverty was so much more visible then. Even the bigots in the south could see it in the white elderly. Most people were genuinely moved by the rhetoric of the "great society" speeches.

A lot was accomplished yet there is so much complaining now.
The 'greed is good' generation took over and has left so much resentment in people of normal good will toward the social programs of the 60s.

I don't have a strong opinion going forward as to how much more can or should be done to fix our social ills, but the RHETORIC surrounding it is depressing.
