A Thought: The single greatest mystery that confronts science is "why is there anything?". This science in the main concurs is the greatest mystery that confronts them, this be the ultimate question. But i will go a step farther and state, to those choosing to believe in a Supreme Being(as i do), that i will here just arbitarily refer to as G-D, the answer to "Why is there anything?" may well even elude G-d itself.
The Zen Buddhist contemplators that have answered the question by saying "There is always was, there is no beginning, there was no time that there was not anything" i have always believed to be offering an excellently clever cop-out.
For their answer begs the question to be ask "But why was there never a beginning, that why was there always something?" Is this the ultimate LOOP, that sign used to signify INFINITY???

p.s. Maybe this is what frustrated Gilda Radner so with her "It's Always Something".
i give the line to Gilda and not the character she created with Rossana, for the book she wrote after having been diagnosed with terminal cancer was titled "It's Always Something".Max
