They don't have a lot of choice in the matter. West Germans know who the East Germans are, and they don't consider them equals. Most of my wife's family is West German, but I do have an East German brother-in-law. They know the difference, and so does he. In many ways, it is similar to the way that Northerners and Southerners viewed each other in the US until very recently. To a typical Yankee, a Rebel wasn't nearly as smart or educated as they were. And both knew that was the attitude. Same in unified Germany. East Germans just don't have the work ethic or the intellect of a West German. If my brother-in-law is any indication, that is nowhere near the truth. His work ethic borders on accepting abuse with no question. Which, none of my other German in-laws show the slightest trace of. And he was able to see opportunities and take advantage of them, unlike the others. And he makes a lot more money than any of the others. But, somehow, he doesn't measure up.

That's exactly the way one of my West German friends explained to me. He said East Germany is like America's southern Appalachia. Northern West Germans don't even like Bavarians all that much.......they see them as money hungry, crass and too conservative but there isn't the animosity they reserve for the East Germans. It doesn't help that the East Germans are less than grateful that West Germany spent many billions bringing East Germany up to western standards.
