However, when you calculate how much gas savings you will have to offset the price premium of a Prius, you have to take the new mpg as calculated by both your current car and the Prius. So that mpg differential just widened, even as both mpg averages went down. Because the differential widened though, your payback period just decreased.

Anyway, I've been thinking for years these mpg figures were erroneous. I've never gotten what they claimed I'd get in all the cars I've bought. So this is a welcome change. Brings the figures more in line with reality.
