Yeah, gets pretty damned cold here in winter, so there aren't too many possibilities for outdoor winter growing. There's a huge hothouse tomato operation just down the road from my place, but even they close up for awhile each winter as I guess the natural gas heating system is uneconomical to run during the coldest part of the winter. Down around Toronto, I don't think that's as much of a problem.

I've been giving more thought to alt energy production this year. I don't think either solar or wind would cut it on their own here, but together, they'd probably cover the bases. Wind might actually be the better choice for our place - not really sure. Someone just put solar on their place around the corner from us. I don't know the people, but it looks interesting.

Then again, as you say, I could just wait a couple of more years and maybe be able to grow avocado in my back yard. (-:
