Collection launched to cater for VCD market

A TOTAL of 220 VCD programmes, comprising top foreign and domestic
movies and TV series, were launched yesterday in Beijing.

The production of the programmes aims to help satisfy China's audio and
video market, where demand is currently estimated at 100 million VCDs
annually, said the Ministry of Radio, Film and Television.

China's crackdown on pirated and pornographic VCDs and video products
over the past two years has been very successful, the ministry said.

However, if not enough VCD products are supplied to meet the booming
market, the strenuous campaign against illegal VCD copies will have to
continue, according to the ministry.

More series of VCD programmes will soon be produced jointly by the
Ministry of Radio, Film and Television, the Ministry of Culture, the
State Press and Publication Administration and the Propaganda Department
of the Communist Party of China.

Most of the films and TV series in the 220 VCD programmes launched
yesterday are appearing on VCDs for the first time. China-made movies
and TV series outnumber overseas movies and TV series by a ratio of 3:2.

Feature films and TV series make up 55 per cent of the programmes, while
43 cartoons have also been recorded on VCD to cater for the needs of
teenagers and children.

The programmes also include performances of some traditional operas. One
of the aims of the VCD collection is to raise the popularity of
traditional culture.
