The point is not whether the guy taking the two hostages was a lunatic or a brutal dictator - we're discussing who is responsible when freed hostage one kills freed hostage two. Switch 'brutal dictator' for 'lunatic' and the paragraph reads the same.

So I don't buy your lunatic hostage taker. It sounds good, and gives you a good excuse to be a cowboy, but in the end, it's just an excuse.

You're discussing whether or not the coalition should have gotten involved. I'm discussing who is responsible when an Iraqi bombs another Iraqi today. They're not quite the same topic.
