I'm curious as to how many Taliban there are....wikipedia doesn't say.

But if you consider the theocratic order of the Taliban, then you should be able to see how 'infidel' to them is equivalent to any non Taliban

Do the Taliban consider other Muslim peoples (Shites, etc.) "infidels", and use this term to describe them?

And if you are willing to blindly make that link the Taliban has used you as a tool.

If the belief among non-Taliban Muslims is that Taliban spokespersons (in this case, Mullah Hayatullah Khan), are just trying to incite more violence between Islam and the West, then shouldn't they be more involved in silencing this kind of rhetoric by fighting side-by-side with U.S. and other western forces to end it?

much like commie, nip, gook, gerry, etc may have been for a soldier identifying an enemy of the USA in the past.

All of those terms are either ethnic slurs or related to the politics of the person being slurred....none of them are related to religion.

Commie -- communist
Nip -- shortened from "Nippon", Japanese word for "Japan"
Gook -- shortened from "Hangook"...Korean word for Korea
Gerry -- derrogotory term for German Soldiers...not related to religion.

Christian soldiers have done the same in history but we are not viewing our military as engaged in holy war

I have never heard of a slur used by American soldiers related specifically to the religion of the opposition. Not that any slurs are ok.

... at least most of us are not. I don't speak for GZ et al

If GZ is a US Soldier, I take back what I wrote in my previous bit. ;-)
