"(Barcelona) is more of a killer product than Athlon was when it was launched," said Henri Richard, executive vice president, referring to the company's present chip for personal computers, which has competed successful against Intel's Pentium line. At a briefing for analysts and the press, AMD of Sunnyvale, Calif., said Barcelona, which is expected in the third quarter, offers a 42% improvement over Intel's quad-core processor by one common measure of computing performance. Quad-core processors put four calculating engines, or computing brains, on a single piece of silicon. "I think that we've been too quiet" in the market place, Richard said. "I'm tired of being pushed around." Business conditions are tough, but Barcelona will strengthen AMD's competitive position, he added.
The R600 was expected by early April and now is likely to reach the market by early May. Richard said he delayed the graphics product so he could simultaneously ship a broader line of high-end and mainstream graphics cards.
