Astonishing Hypocrisy III: The New Swag Bag
— Dirty Harry @ 8:32 am

This is simply unbelievable:

HOLLYWOOD'S wealthy liberals can now avoid any guilt they might feel for consuming so much non-renewable fossil fuel in their private jets, their SUVs, and their multiple air-conditioned mansions. This year's Oscar goodie bag contained gift certificates representing 100,000 pounds of greenhouse gas reductions from TerraPass, which describes itself as a "carbon offset retailer." The 100,000 pounds "are enough to balance out an average year in the life of an Academy Award presenter," a press release from TerraPass asserts.

These goodie bags used to only contain $100,000 in swag. Now it's a year-long license to be a moral hypocrite. And where is the media? Any reporter with an ounce of curiousity and objectivity would be jumping all over this carbon offset nonsense.

Years ago I saw this teriffic short film on Showtime called The Price of Life, about a dystopian future where at birth each baby was assigned life credits. These credits were to be used in a world of dwindling resources for everything from food to recreation to luxury, and once your credits were spent you dropped dead. Well, of course the rich exploited the poor in their quest to live forever. And these carbon offset credits are exactly that. You have wealthy elitists striving to damage everyone else's standard of living with all the higher prices (read: inflation) that come with this environmental nonsense, as they use their elitism to stay above it all. At least in the film, the life credits were real. These offset credits are a total scam. The elite's are staying above it all with a lie.

This reminds me of the clause in the Civil War draft law that allowed the wealthy to pay $300 for a substitute. Once again the poor take the punishment allowing the elite to la-de-da guilt free. And therein lies the difference with we conservatives who seek to raise all boats — not pay off the poor to take the hit for us.

Imagine if carbon offsetting had been Bush's idea. A program he created so an oil refinery could blacken the sky in Houston as some hippie planted trees in Bolivia. Think the liberal media might be a little more curious about the program's bona fides if it were Ken Lay benefitting instead of George Clooney?
