The problem they have is, if you strip out the fantasy that 'Reagan won the Cold War', what are you left with from that era? A failure of a president: huge deficits, wasteful defensive spending, the rise of the Religious Right, corporate avarice and corruption, and, of course, one of the biggest scandals in recent history: Iran Contra.

I believe this is why the conservatives have constructed this Reagan tale, because the truthful alternative is, to them, unthinkable.

Ah, but he was glib.
